Hoosiers Start Season With Wins Against Western Michigan, Butler

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team started the season with strong performances in a 6-1 win over Western Michigan and a 7-0 win over Butler on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center.
Indiana vs. Western Michigan
The Hoosiers (2-0) got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles from Madison Appel and Michelle McKamey and Jelly Bozovic and Caitlin Bernard to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles play it was the freshmen, McKamey and Bozovic that provided the first two points for the Hoosiers. McKamey won 6-0, 6-0 and Bozovic won her match by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Junior Madison Appel clinched the match for the Hoosiers with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot. Junior Natalie Whalen and redshirt sophomore Caitlin Bernard also captured singles wins for the Hoosiers.
Indiana vs. Butler
The Hoosiers started the match by winning all three doubles matches to claim a 1-0 lead.
In singles Bozovic, Bernard and Jahren won in straight sets to clinch the match for the Hoosiers.
Sophomore Anna McCoy rebounded from a first set loss to win her second set and win her third set to give the Hoosiers a fifth point in the match. Cai and McKamey followed suit and they dropped first sets and came back to win their matches as well.
"I thought we had excellent energy and enthusiasm today," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "We aren't playing our best tennis, but that is ok. I want us to continue to grow and improve as the season progresses."
