UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior guard Tyra Buss broke the all-time Indiana Women's Basketball scoring record as it tried to erase a 15-point deficit coming into the fourth quarter, but couldn't pull it off, falling 77-74 at Bryce Jordan Center on Wednesday night.
Buss scored a game-high 27 points, including a 10-for-12 effort from the free throw line, en route to set a new program record with her first layup in the third quarter. She surpassed IU great Denise Jackson's 1,917 career points as she now owns the record outright with her 1,931 points.
Senior forward Amanda Cahill added her seventh double-double of the season with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. The Hoosiers shot 48.1 percent on the night, its second-highest single game field goal percentage of the season. Junior forward Kym Royster also added nine points and seven rebounds while freshman guard Jaelynn Penn added six assists.
As a team, Indiana (7-9, 0-3 B1G) was narrowly outrebounded, 34-33, and committed 18 turnovers in the loss. They shot 40 percent from 3-point range and season-high 84.2 percent from the free throw line (16-for-19).
Royster scored the first six points for the Hoosiers with the game tied 6-6 before the Lady Lions went on a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game. Penn State would go up by as many as eight as IU would get it back down to four on back-to-back buckets by Cahill and Yeaney with 3:29 left in the quarter. A four-point swing by PSU in the next minute led to buckets from Warthen and Marchese on a feed by Buss to tie things back up at 22-all.
But Penn State would end the quarter with the final four points to take a 26-22 lead. IU would get within three on a couple of occasions in the second quarter including after a Cahill bucket with 5:11 to play. The Hoosiers would go cold in the final minutes of the half, not hitting a field goal in an almost four-minute span as PSU's Teniya Page hit a jumper as the buzzer sounded to go in the locker room with a 42-36 halftime lead.
IU would come out of the half for the first two buckets of the third quarter, including the record setting transition layup for Buss on a Cahill feed to force a timeout and trial by just two, 42-40. Penn State responded with a 6-0 run before a triple from Cahill and pair at the line from Buss cut the deficit to one with 6:47 remaining. Still within one with 3:48 on the clock, another run by PSU, this time an 8-0 advantage, closed the third quarter as it led 60-50.
Down by as many as 15 with 6:23 left, IU started to chip away at the deficit with back-to-back 3-pointers from Cahill and sophomore forward Bre Wickware to get the lead under double-digits. A conventional 3-point play by Cahill with 2:46 left put Indiana in the bonus for the remainder of the game as Penn took advantage with two more at the line with 1:31 left to trail 72-69. Penn State responded on the other end with a layup go back up five.
Cahill drained her second 3-pointer of the night with 42 seconds left as PSU would miss on the other end and the rebound pulled down by Wickware. A timeout by Indiana advanced the ball to its end of the court where Buss was fouled on the attempt. She made both bonus shots as Penn State's Siyeh Frazier would come down and drive to the right side to go back up two with 15 seconds left. Trying to get to the rim, Royster would be called for the offensive foul and turning the ball over with four seconds remaining. Forced to foul, Page hit one of two at the line to seal the game for Penn State.

"The last play we had to get the stop, we needed many more of those stops. Transition defense was not existent, especially in the first half, our ability to keep them off the glass, all of those things in the first half that's why we dug ourselves the hole that we dug. Again, you can say what you want about the fight back, but should've never been in a fight. To come back from a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter it's guarding the ball, it's rotating, it's dropping, it's all of the things that we do every single day and we just got to get better.
Moren On Tyra Buss breaking the school record in points scored
"Put the game aside, it's special. It's a special thing anytime that you can become the all-time leading scorer at Indiana, it's a special thing. I'm really proud of Tyra and I'm just really proud of her fight, not that she was perfect tonight defensively but she did everything. She left everything and that's one that I can tell you about Tyra, she never leaves a game whether she scores 27 or she has eight without playing as hard as she can. That's one of the things that I've always admired about her."
Senior guard Tyra Buss
"It means a lot to me. I'm humbled and honored to receive the all-time scoring record at Indiana University. I wish we would've gotten the win that's what we came here to do and that's what was most important to me as the team and us coming out with the win and, unfortunately, we didn't get to do that. But I reached a great milestone that I will remember forever. It's heartbreaking that we lost but I'm glad and honored and humbled to have received this achievement. I came to Indiana University to make a difference, I wanted to be a part of a program changing and I just wanted to build it up to what it deserves to be and I've worked really hard and I think my work ethic has really paid off and shown as I achieved this milestone in my career. As I said, I'm just very humble and grateful. I have to give credit to my coaches and teammates because without them I wouldn't be here."
