BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– The Indiana football team will head to Columbus, Ohio, to play the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. ET. The game will be televised by FOX.
Each week we will compile five quotes and storylines recapping the previous game and previewing the upcoming one.
"Not our best effort from start to finish, but getting the W on the road is always the objective for sure and really happy for our team to be able to be at this point in the season and our first five games and finding ways to win our first four of those five and now we have a chance to get ready for the heart of our Big Ten schedule. So really important to get that last win on the road and now we focus our attention to a very talented and very good football team in Ohio State,"said head coach Tom Allen.
For the first time since 2007, the Hoosiers began their Big Ten road slate with a win after beating Rutgers, 24-17.
"I just think he's matured as a person, as a player, his preparation, everything. But I think what he's done is that - he was hesitant last year. I think - it almost had to be the guy had to be wide open to throw the ball and I think this year he's making throws when guys maybe have some coverage, but yet he can still put the ball on a certain shoulder or a certain number. He has great confidence in his receivers going after the ball as well as him making that throw now and I just think he's more aggressive that way,"said offensive coordinator Mike DeBord.
With the highest completion percentage in the Big Ten at 71.0 percent, redshirt sophomore quarterback Peyton Ramsey sits at a season total of 115 completions for 1,039 yards and eight touchdowns.
"Coach Allen talks about this all the time, anytime you have to go on the road it's
tough, it's difficult to win on the road and we did a good job, we did enough. We weren't perfect by any stretch of imagination, but we did enough to win the game,"said redshirt sophomore quarterback Peyton Ramsey
With one Big Ten road win in the books, Ramsey and the Hoosiers will try to make it two in a row on Saturday in Columbus. Ramsey will attempt to build off of the performance he showed against Rutgers, where he completed 27 passes for 288 yards with a pair of scores, one rushing and one passing. Last year against the Buckeyes, Ramsey only played a handful of snaps and went 2-for-3 passing for 10 yards.
"I feel like we're getting a lot more confidence as each game goes and Peyton and the offensive line have been doing a really good job of just spreading the ball around to all the receivers and letting us do what we do,"said sophomore wide receiver Ty Fryfogle.
As the Hoosiers were without wide receivers Luke Timian and Whop Philyor on Saturday, Fryfogle stepped in. Fryfogle led the team with five receptions for a career-high 70 yards. In 2017, Fryfogle recorded only one catch, but he has 14 receptions for 141 yards in 2018.
"I feel very good about where we are as a defense right now. We started out a little shaky, but we've gotten better every weekend. I think that we're just only going to get better. We have a lot of people playing, guys are excited, they want to get out there. We've really been able to gain confidence through these past few weeks and we're just taking that confidence and running with it. It's been great to watch people grow and really take this seriously,"said redshirt junior linebacker Reakwon Jones.
After the win at Rutgers, Reakwon Jones tapped Tom Allen on the shoulder and told him he wanted to say something to the team in the locker room. Jones' message was encouraging the Hoosiers to finish stronger than they did and not let up at the end of games. Allen approved the message and note linebacker's leadership has transferred over to his play on the field. In five games, the Lynn Haven, Fla., native has registered 17 tackles (13 solo), 3.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one forced fumble.
