BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team announced the signing of 6-0 First Team All-American setter Emily Fitzner (San Diego, Calif.) for the class of 2019.
Fitzner, a native of San Diego, Calif., is an AVCA First Team Under Armour All-American and represents the first AVCA First Team Under Armour All-American in Indiana volleyball program history.
"It's a special day for the Indiana Volleyball program," IU head coach Steve Aird said. "Emily is a First Team All-American and an elite talent. She comes from a very athletic and hard-working family that values competition at the highest level. She has been trained and coached exceptionally well at her high school and club and has experience with the USA Volleyball pipeline."
Fitzner played high school volleyball at Torrey Pines, one of the most successful programs in the history of the CIF-San Diego Section. The program has earned 16 CIF Championships and appeared in three State CIF Finals. In 2017 the team ranked #5 in the final MaxPreps National Rankings. In her senior season, Fitzner helped the team to a 33-4 record.
Going into the last week of her regular season with Torrey Pines, Fitzner had racked up 841 kills, 159 blocks, 1,263 assists, 404 digs and 133 aces and a .349 hitting percentage.
"Emily is one of our leaders and a really hard-working, high level kid who is able to compete and have fun simultaneously," said Fitzner's high school coach Brennan Dean. "She has the ability to let go of points when things don't go right and always finds joy in playing."

"As a 14-year-old freshman at national power Torrey Pines, Fitzner was already a starter and major contributor to the varsity squad. She has wowed her teammates and her coaches since then, embodying the versatility, drive, and determination that every teammate wants on her side. You will always hear "Fitz" in the gym, whether she is exuding competitiveness in the middle of a drill or enthusiastically cheering on her teammates. A First Team All-CIF San Diego Section performer as a junior, Fitzner has that unique, raw talent that makes a player elite. She has the sharp mind and touch of a 5-1 setter, but the powerful arm of an unstoppable pin hitter. Fitzner excels in her adaptability, her discipline is unmatched and she continuously leads her team with a strong presence in the front and back row. She is one of those players that, despite being the top scorer on her team, will always give the credit to her hardworking teammates and her coaches that help teach her to be a better player."
Fitzner comes from an athletic family. Her father Mark played basketball at Stanford and her mother, Cheri was a volleyball player at Hawaii. Her brother Evan is on the men's basketball team at Indiana and her brother Bryce played football at Kansas State.
"I choose IU because I want to help build a program and compete to win a Big Ten conference title," Emily Fitzner said."
"We are going to ask and expect a lot from Emily as soon as she arrives on campus and we know that is what attracted her to this program," Aird said. "We will be adding a few more pieces for 2019, opening up our new arena and building on our first few months with the program. I feel there is a rightful place for Indiana Volleyball among the countries elite and adding a student-athlete with Emily's talent and passion to the roster is a giant step in that direction."
