BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana women's golf head coach Clint Wallman announced the signing of three outstanding students to a National Letter of Intent on Monday. The trio includes Valerie Clancy (Mitchelstown, County Cork, Ireland), Anni Eisenhut (Grünwald, Germany) and Hanna Tanaka (Glenview, Illinois).
All three will join the Hoosiers as freshmen for the Fall 2019 semester.
"We have a tremendous incoming freshman class for 2019," Wallman said. "Anni, Valerie and Hanna all embody the Hoosier spirit and competitiveness and I expect this class to make an impact in our lineup right out of the gate."
Clancy comes to Indiana after a successful junior career in Ireland, where she has competed for the Irish Girls U-18 International Team the last four years at the European Girls team championships. She also helped the Irish Girls team to a victory in 2016 at the Home International matches. In 2014, she was selected to represent Ireland at the R&A Junior British Open in 2014 and at the European Young Masters in 2016.
In the summer of 2018, Clancy claimed the Leitrim Cup as the top qualifier for the Irish Ladies Close Championship, where she would go on to advance to the final eight. She also won the Best U-18 honor at the Irish Ladies Close Championship in 2016 and 2018. And in 2016, she was honored as the winner of the Darren Clarke Champions Weekend for the best female junior in Ireland.
Clancy is the daughter of Kieran and Nora Clancy and she has one brother, Conor.
"Valerie can get it done on the course plain and simple," Wallman said. "Her experience in rough weather conditions sets her up to be a big time player in our conference and nationally. She has all the tools plus a tremendous amount of grit and I am sure she will excel at the collegiate level."
Eisenhut is a native of Germany and is a two-time winner of the Bavarian Player of the Year award (2016, 2017) and has been ranked as high as 340 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. She has won the Bavarian Girls Ranking in each of the last three years and was named Bavarian Athlete of the Year in 2016.
Most recently, Eisenhut finished second at the German National U-18 Girls Championship and third at the German National Amateur Championship. She also took second at the German National U-16 Girls Championship in 2017. She also has a handful of victories in her junior career, including the 2017 European Junior, the 2017 Austrian Junior Golf Tour – International Junior Golf Challenge U-16 and the Bavarian Ladies (State) Golf Championship in 2016.
Her parents are Dr. Martin and Ulrike Eisenhut and she has one brother, Paul.
"Anni has what I call 'the scoring gene,' Wallman said. "She has the uncanny ability to get the ball into the hole whether she is hitting it well or not. It will be really exciting to watch her game mature at the collegiate level."
Tanaka is a native of Glenview, Illinois and Glenbrook South High School, where she posted a scoring average of 74 her senior year. She placed 10th at the Illinois State Championship after a fifth-place finish at regionals and a third-place finish at sectionals. She also won the Rockford Guilford Invitational with a 68 and was a 4-time all-conference selection while helping her team to a pair of state championship appearances.
Her junior golf career has featured back-to-back Illinois Junior Golf Association Player of the Year and a top 10 finish at the USGA US Girls Junior Qualifier. Tanaka also finished 15th at the AJGA Open at Otter Creek and participated in the IMG Junior World Championship.
Her parents are Ray and Nhan Tanaka and she has one brother, Brendan.
"Hanna rounds out a really strong freshman class," Wallman said of Tanaka. "Not only does she bring great passion and instinct for the game, she also brings the ability to shoot low numbers. She will add much needed depth to our roster. I fully expect Hanna to be battling for a spot in the lineup."
