BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Redshirt junior guard Brenna Wise recorded her first double-double of the season as Indiana used a big third quarter and five in double figures to roll past Florida, 83-64, on Wednesday afternoon. The win improved the Hoosiers to 4-0 on the season, the best start since 2014-15.
KEY MOMENTS
- After trailing 9-2, IU went on a 7-0 run to tie the game up on a Yeaney 3-pointer with 3:56 left in the first quarter. Going back-and-forth, the Gators would take the 19-17 advantage on a Delicia Washington transition layup with 14 seconds left.
- Penn tied the game back up at 19-all on the Hoosiers first possession of the second quarter. Things were tied up until the 6:28 mark when connected and followed up with 3-pointer on the left side on a feed by Yeaney.
- After exchanging five ties and seven lead changes in the first half – including another tie game at 33-all - it would be Indiana to take the advantage into the break leading 39-33.
- The Hoosiers broke open the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Gators, 23-13, in the frame. Florida would cut the lead down to as few as six with 5:45 remaining but a 13-5 run closed it out for IU, taking a 62-46 lead with 10 minutes to go. Wise would go on to score 11 of her 18 in the third as Indiana shot 54.5 percent in the third and 9-for-9 from the line.
- In the fourth, IU led by as many as 22 as it cruised to its 14th consecutive home victory.
NOTABLES
- Indiana improved to 4-0 with the victory over Florida, 83-64. The Gators fell to 0-5 on the year.
- IU's 4-0 start is the best for the Hoosiers since going 4-0 in 2014-15 season.
- The Hoosiers are now 3-1 all-time against Florida and have won two-straight in the series. IU posted a 102-88 victory in Winter Park, Fla. on Dec. 20, 2016.
- Redshirt junior forward Brenna Wise recorded the first double-double of her Indiana career finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
- Senior Kym Royster posted the fifth double-double of her career, totaling 13 points and 10 rebounds.
- Also scoring double-figures for IU were sophomore guard Jaelynn Penn with 13 points, freshman guard Grace Berger with a career-high 11 and freshman forward Aleksa Gulbe had 10.
- The double-figure scoring game was the 31st for Royster, the 20th for Penn, the third for Wise, the second for Gulbe and the first for Berger.
- The Hoosiers outrebound the Gators, 39-30 and shot 75 percent from the free throw line (15-for-20).
- Indiana dished out 19 assists on 30 made field goals against the Gators, led by redshirt junior guard Ali Patberg with seven.
- Indiana's defense held Florida leading scorer redshirt senior guard Funda Nakkasoglu to just five points, well below her average of 23.0 points per game.
"Great defensive performance from Bendu Yeaney regarding #3 (Funda Nakkasoglu) the senior. She's put up games of 33 and 26 (points). Incredible the way she scores the ball, especially from behind the arc. I thought Benny did a tremendous job. It was great. The only knock I have for Yeaney is the missed free throw. Instead of five in double digits, we would have had six. That's a great thing for a basketball team. We had moments where we were scoring the ball and lulls. Turned the ball over too much still. That was on us. It wasn't anything that Florida was doing. Not taking care of the ball continues to be an area of emphasis for us. This is a great win, against an SEC opponent. I'm happy for our players this afternoon."
