BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With Team Cross clinching Indiana baseball's Fall World Series on Saturday afternoon, Team Fineman played with pride on Sunday to squeak out a 7-6 victory.
Ryan Fineman's squad strung together eight hits, with three coming from junior Jeremy Houston and sophomore Drew Ashley, who homered, while sophomore Sam Crail recorded the other two hits and drove in three runs on a three-run home run.
Senior Logan Kaletha reached base in all five of his plate appearances for Team Cross, as he hit a double and drew four walks while scoring twice. Jake Skrine was also strong for the visitors, as he was 3-for-5 with two RBI.
KEY MOMENTS
• Team Cross got a leadoff double from Kaletha in the top of the first and Justin Walker was hit by a pitch, setting up a two-run single for Skrine to give his team an early 2-0 lead.
• Team Fineman answered though in the bottom half of the first, as Ashley led off with a solo home run off the centerfield light pole. An RBI single by Houston later in the inning, followed by a Pat Loeffler sacrifice fly gave Fineman a 3-2 edge.
• The offensive production for Fineman's club continued in the bottom of the second. Ashley reached base leading off again with a single and Houston drew a two-out walk to set up Crail, who smacked a three-run home run.
• Back-to-back singles for Matt Lloyd and Skrine set up a Scotty Bradley RBI double in the top of the third. A fielder's choice by Carter Bridge and an RBI groundout by Tyler Van Pelt put Cross within one run, trailing 6-5.
• Team Fineman manufactured a run in the fourth as Houston lead off with a double, advanced to third on a productive Crail groundout and then scored on a Loeffler RBI groundout.
• Trailing by two in the top of the 7th, Team Cross fought to the end. Kaletha worked a one-out walk and Walker tripled to score him to cut the deficit to one. However, Cal Krueger struck out the dangerous Skrine to secure the win.
• Connor Manous logged a perfect frame in the sixth inning, striking out all three batters he faced.
