BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – This winter, all 24 of Indiana University's athletic teams have participated in the season of giving.
Indiana University Athletics partnered with Bloomington Salvation Army and donated gifts to the Angel Tree program. Angel Tree started almost 40 years ago and provides an opportunity for people in the community to give back to families who need a little assistance putting gifts under the tree this holiday season.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of two representatives from each sport team. The two representatives from each team organize the fundraising on their teams by collecting money from their respective athletes and coaches. Each team received one child's wish list and this season SAAC was able to help 24 children from various families. In order to complete the shopping, teams receive a list from the Salvation Army comprised of a child's dream gift, clothing sizes, and other gifts the children asked for. Each team was able to give bags of gifts to each child.
Claire Woods on the SAAC executive board shared, "I think that this is one of my favorite activities that we do together as an athletic department. It is amazing to see the masses of gifts that are brought in and also fun to imagine the different teams going out and shopping. The special effort that is put into the gifts is unmatched and shows that we really care about the community who supports us and that we want to do the same for them."
