BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head coach Mike Mayer has announced the signing of two high school seniors to a National Letter of Intent. Eric Berggren (Windermere, Fla.) and Andrew Giacchetto (Canton, Mass.) will join the Hoosiers as freshmen during the fall of the 2019-20 academic year.
"We are thrilled to have Eric and Andrew join our Hoosier family," Mayer said. "They both bring very impressive athletic and academic components to our program."
Berggren, ranked 90th in the class of 2019, helped guide Windermere Prep School to a pair of team state championships and all-area selection while also racking up an outstanding junior golf resume. He carded rounds of 70-69 in the U.S. Amateur Championship qualifier to advance to the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach. At the Boys' Junior Amateur Championship, he finished in a tie for ninth with scores of 73-70-71.
Berrgren racked up a T14 finish at the 2018 Bubba Conlee, a tie for 10th at the 2018 Florida High School State Championship and a tie for 14th at the 2018 Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship.
The son of Anders and Karin Berggren, he intends to major in Finance or Business upon enrolling at Indiana.
"Eric has had a tremendous year in both junior and amateur golf that has elevated him to one of the top recruits in the country," Mayer said. "His resume includes qualifying for the United States Amateur Championship, which was played at Pebble Beach. He has a power game that will easily transition into collegiate golf."
Giacchetto is a left-hander who hails from Canton, Massachusetts. He has a Top 5 and a Top 10 finish on the AJGA circuit to his credit. He won the 2017 Kingman Cup individual title in 2017 and followed that up with a runner-up showing in 2018. He was also the Cape Cod Amateur Runner-Up in 2018 and won the Challenge Cup Spring Match Play Championship. His career match play record in high school is a dazzling 46-2-6.
He helped St. Sebastian's School win three straight league titles (2016-18) and back-to-back Kingman Cup team crows in 2017 and 2018.
He is the son of Chuck and Lynn Giaccetto and he has two brothers, Brent and Chad, and intends to major in Finance at IU.
"Andrew is a strong lefty who is not afraid to go toe to toe with anybody," Mayer said. "He is extremely strong and has the length and power to play collegiate golf and also has an outstanding finesse game. He has a tremendous up-side and has the potential to develop into a top collegiate golfer."
