SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Indiana University men's soccer's Andrew Gutman was named one of three finalists for the 2018 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy on Friday, United Soccer Coaches announced. The three finalists were determined by voting from NCAA Division I soccer coaches.
Gutman, along with Denver's Andre Shinyashiki and Kentucky's J.J. Williams, are the three finalists for the prestigious. The MAC Hermann Trophy has been awarded annually since 1967.
A unanimous selection as Big Ten Defender of the Year and First-Team All-Big Ten, Gutman also earned First-Team All-North Region accolades this season. A MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, Gutman leads the Hoosiers with 11 goals on the season to go with nine assists.
Along with all his offensive efforts, Gutman remains one of the best defenders in the country, helping the Hoosiers post a NCAA-best 15 shutouts on the season and the second-best goals-against average in the nation at 0.466.
Gutman makes it back-to-back MAC Hermann Trophy finalists for IU, as Grant Lillard was runner-up for the award last season. Danny O'Rourke is the last Hoosier to win the MAC Hermann Trophy, taking home the award in 2004.
The MAC has honored the top player in collegiate soccer since 1986. Prior to 2002, the Missouri Athletic Club and Hermann Trophy were two separate awards.
Two IU players earned the MAC Player of the Year trophy on three occasions with Ken Snow taking the honor in 1988 and 1990, and current IU head coach Todd Yeagley in 1994. Hoosiers collected five Hermann trophies with Angelo DiBernardo in 1978, Armando Betancourt in 1981, Ken Snow in 1988 and 1990, and Brian Maisonneuve in 1994.
The No. 1-ranked Indiana Hoosiers will face the No. 15 Maryland Terrapins on Friday, Dec. 7 in the College Cup national semifinals at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif. The match will be televised nationally live on ESPNU at 10:30 p.m. ET.
