BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Baseball (1-1) sprung out to a five-run lead through four innings and allowed just two hits to pick up a 5-0 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats (0-2) on Saturday afternoon at TicketReturn.com Field.
Junior righty Pauly Milto put together a strong performance on the mound, allowing just one hit in six innings, striking out five and walking two. Milto retired 16 of the last 17 batters he faced and had a no-hitter through 5.2 innings.
Senior Logan Sowers connected on his second home run of the year to now give him four-straight games in which he has homered, dating back to last season's NCAA Regional in Lexington, Ky. The Lafayette, Ind. native went 2-for-4 on the day and has tallied five hits over his first two contests this year.
IU's middle of the lineup was effective all game, as the four, five, six and seven hitters each recorded two-hit games. Junior Ryan Fineman went 2-for-3 with a run scored, recording his second-straight multi-hit game, while freshman Elijah Dunham and sophomore Matt Gorski, each had two hits and an RBI.
Indiana pieced together a run in the bottom of the second on three-straight singles from Sowers, Fineman and Dunham. Fineman's base-hit up the middle went off the second base bag, allowing Sowers to reach third. Dunham then singled up the middle to give the Hoosiers and early 1-0 lead.
Sowers paved way for a big fourth inning, as he led off with a solo home run to the opposite field on the first pitch of his at bat. Fineman followed by reaching base on a hit by pitch and then advanced to third on a double down the right field line by Dunham. Gorski then drove a single through the right side to bring in a run and then stole second. An RBI groundout by junior Cade Bunnell and a sacrifice fly by Houston extended IU's lead to 5-0, capping off a four-run frame.
After Milto surrendered a leadoff walk in the second inning, he retired his next 14 hitters. The no-hit bid ended on a bloop single to center field with two outs in the top of the sixth.
The Wildcats didn't have a baserunner reach past second base the entire game, and only had runners reach second twice in the contest.
Freshman pitcher Tommy Sommer made his Indiana debut and closed out the game. He logged three scoreless innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts and a walk, as he picked up the three-inning save.
Indiana returns to action on Sunday as it plays No. 24 South Alabama at 10:30 a.m. The game will be played at Coastal Carolina's Springs Brooks Stadium.
