MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Indiana Baseball (3-1) faced a 5-3 deficit, but scored the game's final three runs to pick up its third straight win, knocking off Coastal Carolina, 6-5, on Monday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Junior Luke Miller led the way for IU, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI and two runs scored. Junior Logan Kaletha was 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and three runs scored, as he reached base four times and was involved in four of IU's six runs. Senior Logan Sowers also accounted for two hits in the contest.
Indiana's bullpen was strong again, as senior Kade Kryzsko (1 inning), sophomore Cal Krueger (2 innings) and junior Matt Lloyd (2 innings) combined for five shutout innings of relief.
Kaletha led off the game with a triple to right field as the ball nearly cleared the fence. Miller drove him in on a sacrifice fly to right to give IU the quick lead. The Chanticleers answered though in the bottom of the first with two doubles and a catcher's interference to tie the game up at one.
With one out in the top of the third, Kaletha was hit by a pitch to set things up for Miller, who with two outs, drove one over the fence to the opposite field to give IU the 3-1 lead.
Coastal Carolina's big inning came in the fourth. The first two hitters reached base via a single and walk, and then advanced to second and third on a passed ball. The Chanticleers' Matt Beaird followed that up with a two-run single to tie the game at three. A sacrifice bunt and two-straight singles led to two more runs for CCU, as it took a 5-3 lead.
Indiana rallied again in the fifth inning. Houston led off the frame with a double to the right centerfield gap and Kaletha singled him in to cut the lead to one. After Kaletha was caught stealing and Lloyd grounded out, Miller cleared the centerfield wall for his second long ball of the game to knot the contest back up at five.
The Hoosiers pieced together the game-winning run in the seventh. Kaletha led things off by being hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Miller drove him in on an RBI groundout to make it 6-5.
After Krueger tossed two scoreless innings of relief, Lloyd entered in the eighth to close the game out. In the eighth, Lloyd faced a first and third situation with nobody out, but escaped it by forcing a fly out and two foul outs.
After the leadoff man reached on an error in the ninth, Lloyd forced a pair of groundouts and a fly out to pick up his first save of the season.
The Hoosiers are back in action this Friday at 3 p.m. as it opens the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. against Rutgers. IU will also take on Boston College and Chicago State over the weekend.
