WESTFIELD, Ind. – Behind a balanced attack, Indiana Women's Soccer defeated Butler in the spring season opener Saturday at Grand Park, 3-1. IU saw goals from junior Maya Piper, sophomore Chandra Davidson and junior Caroline Dreher, while freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel posted a second-half shutout to ensure the victory.
The Bulldogs struck first as they took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a shot 10 yards out.
However, Piper would tie things up in the 37th minute on a header from five yards away. After an initial corner kick was cleared, the ball was re-served back into the box by sophomore Julia Gilliam. Piper, who led the Hoosiers in scoring last season with seven goals, was there for the rebound after it knocked off the crossbar.
Just before half, the Hoosiers took the lead for good as Davidson sent a rocket to the top corner from 25 yards. The ball was pushed forward through the midfield and picked up by redshirt junior Mykayla Brown, who played it to Davidson for the score. Davidson netted six goals for Indiana last season, with three of them coming as game-winners.
After a quiet start to the second half for both teams, Dreher extended the Indiana lead to 3-1 in the 83rd minute on a ball that beat the Butler keeper high to the back post. Dreher started the run on the left side, as she streaked up and picked up a ball from freshman Melanie Forbes, sending it in from 35 yards.
Indiana continues its spring slate March 24 as the Hoosiers host Saint Louis. The game will be played at the Indiana practice field, located at 10th and the Bypass. Admission is free.
