TEMPE, Ariz. – Indiana Softball dropped a pair of games in Friday's season-opening Kajikawa Classic. The Hoosiers fell to Boise State, 7-6, and Oregon State, 4-1.
Boise State 7, Indiana 6
In the first game of the day, the Hoosiers nearly worked themselves out of a 6-0 third-inning hole, but ultimately dropped the game, 7-6.
Sophomore Gabbi Jenkins led the bats with a 3-for-5 outing, adding a run and two RBI. Seniors Rebecca Blitz and Taylor Uden each collected a pair of hits in the game.
The Broncos loaded the bases to start the game on a single from Justene Molina, a Hoosier fielding error and a walk to Rebekah Cervantes. Halle Harger then cleared the bags on a grand slam to left center to put Boise State up early, 4-0.
Indiana looked to respond in the home half of the opening frame as Jenkins singled before taking second on an error and Katie Lacefield drew a one-out walk, however a strikeout and pop-out would strand the runners.
Boise State extended its lead in the third as Jessica McKay singled up to middle to plate two Broncos and make it 6-0.
However, the Hoosiers quickly loaded the bases in response on a single from Blitz, a Bronco fielding error and a Lacefield walk. Freshman Maddie Westmoreland, making her Hoosier debut, delivered with a single to center, bringing Blitz and Jenkins home.
Indiana inched closer in the fifth on a lead-off homer by Uden, who knocked seven homers a season ago.
The Broncos got that run back in the following inning on a one-run double from Kora Wade to score Shaelee Pearson, who reached on a Hoosier throwing error.
The comeback bid wasn't over for the Hoosiers, who put up a trio of runs in the seventh. After freshman Annika Baez homered to lead off the inning, freshman Taylor Lambert started a two-out rally by drawing a walk. Blitz singled to put two on for Jenkins, who doubled to left to cut the deficit to 7-6. However, a popout to shortstop would end the game.
Sophomore Emily Goodin pitched a solid outing in relief, going 4.2 innings and allowing just one runs off four hits with four strikeouts. Redshirt sophomore Josie Wood took the loss for Indiana.
Oregon State 4, Indiana 1
Against the Beavers, the Hoosiers took a 1-0 lead into the fifth before Oregon State plated four unanswered runs to seal the victory.
Uden led off the third inning with a triple off the wall in right center and was brought home on a single from Baez. It marked the first triple of Uden's career.
The Indiana lead remained intact until the fifth, when the Beavers put up three runs to take the lead for good. McKenna Arriola tied the game up at 1-1 as she knocked a one-out double to left to plate Chance Burden. Arriola was brought in a sacrifice fly in foul territory from Shelby Weeks before a Hoosier error allowed Everett to score and make it 3-1.
Oregon State pushed the lead to 4-1 in the sixth on a leadoff homer from Missy Nunes.
Goodin stepped in and delivered another productive outing in relief as she walked the first batter she saw then retired the next three in order.
Junior Tara Trainer took the loss for Indiana as she went 5.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday as they face Northwestern at 4 p.m. ET and San Jose State at 9:45 p.m. ET. Both games will be streamed live on FloSoftball.com.
