OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Indiana Softball's Rebecca Blitz has been named one of 30 candidates nationwide for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced on Thursday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Blitz, a two-time Second Team All-Big Ten and NFCA All-Region pick, led the Hoosiers in batting average and hits during her sophomore and junior campaigns. Blitz sits in the top 10 in nearly every offensive category in Indiana history as her .333 career batting average ranking sixth all-time, her 197 hits is seventh all-time and 110 runs scored is fifth. In addition, her 67 stolen bases comes in at fourth in the IU record book. The Mountain Brook, Ala. native has played in all 187 games of her career, with 185 starts in centerfield.
Off the field, Blitz is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten pick and will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science in Business. She plans to get her Master of Science in Information Systems at Indiana. She's been involved in numerous organizations, including Hoosier Heroes peer mentoring and the Athletic Director's Council on Diversity and Inclusivity.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
