Maryland Edges Out Indiana In Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals
3/2/2018 10:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana came within as few as three in the final five minutes of the game, but three-time defending and No. 2 seed Maryland came out on top of No. 7 seed Indiana, 67-54, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Senior forward Amanda Cahill led with 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks as she set a new Indiana Big Ten Tournament record with a combined 55 points in two games. Senior guard Tyra Buss added 13 points, three assists and three rebounds while freshman guard Bendu Yeaney also added double figures with 10 points on a 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line to go along with two assists and two rebounds. Buss finished the night with 640 points for the season, just three shy of setting the school record set by Karna Abram in 1984-85.
The Hoosiers shot 39.2 percent from the floor and just 21.4 percent from the 3-point line as they were outrebounded, 39-26. Maryland shot 45.3 percent from the floor led by 24 points from sophomore guard Kalia Charles who also contributed seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Cahill started thing off for Indiana as she had four of IU's six points to trail by one at the media timeout. Yeaney got herself to the line to take its first lead with 4:25 remaining as the two teams exchanged leads as Maryland would take a one-point advantage, 13-12, after the first. In the second quarter, Buss got her first bucket of the night with 3:03 on a drive inside to put IU up 21-20. Another back-and-forth exchanged closed out the first half, with Indiana cutting the deficit down to two, 29-27, on a pair at the line from sophomore forward Bre Wickware.
The game was kept just as close throughout the third quarter as IU took the lead on four separate occasions. But the Terps seemed to have an answer to IU's lead changes as Buss beat her defender to score on the right side giving her team a 40-39 lead. It would be the last lead for the Hoosiers, however, who fell behind after a 9-0 run by Maryland closed out the third quarter to trail 48-40.
Indiana would chip away at the lead by the three-time defending champion Terps, bring the game down to a one possession game with 4:34 to go in the game. It came as part of a five-point play by Buss who drained the corner 3-pointer and off-ball foul on Cahill sent her to the line. But Indiana would go without a field goal for almost three minutes as Maryland stepped up to hit timely shots and capitalize on bonus free throws to advance to tomorrow's semifinal round.
