BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana men's tennis team (8-9) fell in their Big Ten home opener to the No. 7 Illinois Fighting Illini, 5-2, on Friday night inside the IU Tennis Center. Senior Raheel Manji and sophomore Zac Brodney gave IU its two wins.
Doubles was filled with highs and lows for both teams as the scores went back and forth. The Hoosiers found themselves down at all three spots early on but rallied to either tie or take a lead in all matches. Juniors Antonio Cembellin and Afonso Salgado roared back to win 6-3 at the second spot.
While tied 5-5 at the top spot, Illinois pulled ahead to even up doubles. With the extra point coming down to the third spot, the Illini turned a 4-4 tie into a 7-5 win to give them the doubles point.
At the second spot, Illinois pushed their lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win. With a 6-3, 7-5 victory by Brodney at the five spot, IU cut that lead to 2-1.
Shortly after, it was Illinois again putting a point on the board and they would edge out the next few matches. In the final match of the day, Manji came back from a first set loss to win the second set in a tiebreaker and the third set 10-3 over No. 59 Alex Brown.
Up next, the Hoosiers go back on the road for a pair of Big Ten matches, against Michigan State on March 30 and Michigan on March 31.
