BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer held its annual postseason banquet on Sunday as the team reflected back on the 2017 campaign. The banquet, which was held at Henke Hall of Champions, celebrated team and individual accomplishments, as well as the 2017 senior class in Kylie Kirk and Kayla Smith.
The Hoosiers finished the year 6-9-4, including a 4-3-1 mark in non-conference action. One of the biggest victories for Indiana came on Sept. 8 as the Hoosiers defeated No. 23 SMU in Dallas, marking the first ranked win for the program since 2010.
Off the field, Indiana earned 16 Academic All-Big Ten selections, four CoSIDA Academic All-District nods and the program's fifth Herbert Cup.
Below are the awards that were voted on by the team and handed out during Sunday's banquet.
Defensive MVP – Bethany Kopel (Freshman | Novi, Mich.)
Kopel played every minute of the 2017 season in goal and finished the season with 96 saves, the second-most ever for an Indiana freshman. In addition, her five shutouts were the most for an Indiana freshman since 2007 and is tied for 10th-most overall in program history. She ranked near the top nationally in goalkeeper minutes played and had nine games with six save or more. Additionally, she was awarded Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on Oct. 17.
Offensive MVP – Maya Piper (Junior | Midland, Mich.)
Piper found the back of the net a career-high seven times to lead the Indiana scoring. She recorded her first multi-goal game in Indiana's 4-0 win against Western Michigan and scored the gamewinner at No. 23 SMU. In addition, she assisted on a pair of goals, including Mykayla Brown's 90th minute equalizer at North Texas. She played in all 19 games and got the start in the final 17 games of the year.
Rookie of the Year – Hanna Németh (Freshman | Diosd, Hungary)
This year, Indiana saw nine players put on the Cream and Crimson for the first time. Németh started every game of the 2017 season in the back and was the only Hoosier field player to play every minute of the fall. She collected a pair of assists this season – on one of Chandra Davidson's goal at Western Michigan and on Maya Piper's goal against Purdue.
Most Improved Player – Abby Allen (Junior | Whitehouse, Ohio)
Allen played in all 19 games for Indiana, making a career-best seven starts. She scored her first career goal at North Texas on Sept. 10 and tallied an assist on one of Maya Piper's goal at Western Michigan.
Unsung Hero – Caroline Dreher (Junior | Westlake, Ohio)
The Unsung Hero Award is given to the player whose contributions are not always noted in the box score or in the newspaper, but are key to the team's success. Dreher played in all 19 games and made 16 starts on the backline, including the final 15 games of the season. She showed her versatility throughout the year and was a huge part of the team's defensive success. Additionally, Dreher was named Indiana's 2017 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.
Coaches Award – Chandra Davidson (Sophomore | Binbrook, Ontario)
The Coaches' Award is the one award that the staff chooses based on a player's attitude and dedication. It's given to the player who continually puts the team above everything else and is always willing to do whatever it takes to win. Davidson started all 19 games this year and was a key contributor to Indiana's offensive success. She scored six goals this season and added two assists. She continually stepped up when the game was on the line as three of her goals proved to be gamewinners for Indiana – including Indiana's 1-0 victories at Vanderbilt and Michigan State.
