Freshman pair make turf debuts for Indiana
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Indiana's field hockey team embarked on their 2018 spring schedule with a pair of 60-minute scrimmages at Trager Stadium, hosted by the University of Louisville. Indiana split their results against Miami University and Louisville, falling 4-2 to the RedHawks before rebounding with a 1-1 draw against the Cardinals.
The spring openers gave freshmen Shelby Querry and Olivia Rice their first game experience in the IU uniform. Querry got the start against the Cardinals and gave an outstanding defensive effort between the pipes, seeing action in both games. The first-year duo received redshirts during the 2017 season.
The Hoosiers opened their spring slate against the RedHawks and fell by two goals on the final scoreline. Sophomore Kelsey Giese scored both Hoosier goals in the clutch, finding equalizers in both halves.
Following Miami's opening score, Giese retaliated on an opportunistic play. Louisville's keeper parried the initial shot from Claire Woods, but Giese coolly collected the rebound and throttled it into the board.
Giese collected another in the second half, an answer to Miami's go-ahead goal at 2-1. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Morford threaded a pass to Giese, who sent it home for another equalizer.
Giese had four goals and 10 points (3rd – team) in 2017 and attempted a team-leading 55 shots.
Indiana regrouped for a scrimmage against the hosts later in the afternoon and improved from their previous result, playing Louisville to a 1-1 draw. Trailing by one midway through the second half, Nora Aucker gathered the ball and sent it towards goal for her first score of the preseason. The Hoosiers held the defensive line for the final 20 minutes.
Seeking the successor to Katie Johnson's outstanding season between the posts, the Hoosiers split goalkeeping duties between Querry and Sachi Ananias. Querry started against the RedHawks while Ananias earned the start versus Louisville.
