BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Jack Carney has been a student manager with the Indiana women's tennis program for two years.
In that time Jack has built friendships with the team, helped in their success and he will be remembered as a great part of the program.
The Indiana women's tennis coaching staff emphasized what Jack has meant to the program.
"Jack has been an invaluable member of our team and we are so grateful for Jack's unwavering commitment to our program during his two seasons. He is irreplaceable. Jack is a great worker and a better person. He will be highly successful and will be greatly missed."
Tennis has been part of Jack's life from the beginning. His parents got his siblings and him started in the sport at a young age, when he was in middle school. He started his collegiate career playing at Northern Kentucky playing No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles, however, after two years decided to transfer to Indiana to focus more on academics.
A year after being at Indiana, he was at a club tennis practice and the men's manager was also there saying to a few people that the women's job was available. He went to him after practice and told him that he was interested, and he gave him head coach Ramiro Azcui's phone number and a few days later Jack met with him.
Ironically, Jack only went to about five club tennis practices his entire time at Indiana, so he picked a good day to go that day.
Jack said his favorite part about working with the team has been the friendships he has made. He said he would like to thank his parents for giving him the opportunity to come to Indiana. His also said he wants to thank Ramiro for everything he has done and the team has made the experience so special.
"I wouldn't trade these two years for anything and the team, the coaches and the staff are the reason why," Jack said.
Junior Madison Appel sums up what Jack has meant to the program.
"Having Jack the past two years has really changed the dynamic of the team," Appel said. "His fun spirit and energy has brought such positivity to the team and he will never be replaced. We will miss him so much next year!"
