COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Indiana Softball took game one of its series against Maryland on Friday night, plating a season high in runs with the 10-1 victory in five innings. It marks the first run-rule win of the season for IU, who improved to 8-2 in Big Ten play.
The Hoosiers collected 13 hits on the night, including multi-hit efforts from seniors Taylor Uden and Rachel O'Malley, sophomores Gabbi Jenkins and Katie Lacefield and freshman Taylor Lambert. Uden also collected four RBI in the win and scored a pair of runs.
In the circle, junior Tara Trainer collected her 10th win of the season, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four. With 495 career strikeouts, Trainer now moves into fifth place in program history, surpassing Morgan Melloh's 494 punchouts.
"We were extremely aggressive in all facets of the game," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "Tara was pounding the zone to put is in great position right from the beginning. We got off to a tremendous start offensively – we strung hits together, were able to run and played small ball. Uden was the player of the game with her moments. She came through today and was huge in different clutch situations. That's what we've been preaching all year – wanting different players to step up and come through. Overall a complete team effort today."
Indiana got on the board in the second, plating a pair of runs with two outs. After senior Aimilia McDonough drew a walk, Uden doubled to right center to bring her in, marking the first of two runs for McDonough. Uden then scored as Lambert singled on a blooper to shallow left field to make it 2-0.
A five-run third frame busted the game open for Indiana as the Hoosiers jumped to a 7-0 lead, collecting four hits in the inning and taking advantage of two Maryland fielding errors. Things for started for IU as freshman Maddie Westmoreland reached on an error by the Maryland first baseman. Lacefield then doubled to put runners on second and third for O'Malley, who laid down a squeeze to plate Makayla Ferrari, in running for Westmoreland. Junior Sarah Galovich then reached as her ball went between the legs of the Terrapin third baseman, allowing Lacefield to push the advantage to 4-0. The inning was capped by a three-run shot from Uden to left field, her third homer of the season.
The Terrapins got one run back in the bottom of the third as Skylynne Ellazer's RBI fielder's choice scored Amanda Brashear.
After Jenkins and senior Rebecca Blitz knocked back-to-back singles, the duo executed a perfect double steal as Blitz stole home to make it 8-1. Jenkins advanced to third on a flyout from Westmoreland before Lacefield sent an RBI single back up the middle.
The final Hoosier run of the day was set up by a pinch-hit single by sophomore Bella Norton. After Galovich re-entered the game, she advanced to second on a groundout before advancing to third on a wild pitch. She then scored as Lambert singled on a bunt to extend the IU lead to 10-1.
Due to the weather forecast Sunday, the teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday to wrap up the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
