Hoosiers Fall in Big Ten Tournament to Michigan State

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Indiana women's tennis team came up short as they fell, 4-2, to Michigan State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers finish the season with an overall record of 17-11. The 17 wins represent the most for Indiana since the 2013-14 season.
The match began with a tightly contested doubles point. Natalie Whalen and Xiwei Cai won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. The Hoosiers held a 6-5 lead at the No. 2 position, but Michigan State came back to force a tiebreak and win the tiebreak. The Spartans earned the doubles point with a 7-5 win at the No. 1 position.
In singles, the Hoosiers got wins from juniors Madison Appel (6-4, 6-3) and Natalie Whalen (6-2, 3-6, 6-2).
Although the Spartans won at 4, 5, and 6 singles, the Hoosiers made them work for it as two of those three matches went to three sets.
