Hoosiers Take Fourth at CWPA Championship

Indiana places three on All-CWPA Tournament team
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 14 Indiana water polo team finished fourth-place at the 2018 CWPA Championship after suffering an 8-5 defeat to No. 13 Hartwick in their final match of the weekend. The Hoosiers (25-9) made an excellent defensive stand in the first half, but a third quarter surge from the Hawks (30-11) sealed Indiana's fate.

Several seniors made key contributions in the final game of their careers. Jessica Gaudreault blocked nine shots, including her third penalty save of the weekend, with two steals from the cage. Kelly Matthews scored twice to cap her career scoring total at 250 (2nd – IU history) along with four swipes to push into the top-10 for career steals (177 – 10th in IU history).
Sarah Myers provided two assists and made five steals, one shy of her career high, while Sarah Young set one assist with one steal.
Sophomore Joelle Nacouzi completed a superb CWPA Championship weekend, scoring two goals with a steal on the other end. Nacouzi ends the tournament at five goals and four assists, leading the team with nine points.
Karrie Kozokar scored in the fourth quarter, bringing her weekend total to a team-leading seven goals. The redshirt junior has 96 goals through just three seasons of action.
Indiana began on strong footing in the first half, scoring the first two goals while shutting out the Hawks in the opening frame. Matthews delivered both first quarter goals to the net from considerable range, the latter being a skip shot from the top of the attacking area.
Nacouzi's long-range goal in the second quarter ensured a halftime lead, at 3-2, despite a resurgence from the Hartwick offense. The Hawks picked up the third quarter where they left the second, scoring three unanswered over the eight-minute clip.
IU found two more goals in the fourth quarter. Kozokar broke up the Hartwick run with a shot that rattled the goalpost, fed from the wing by Young's assist. And Nacouzi converted a power play in the final minute for her second in the game.
Indiana head coach Ryan Castle posted a 25-9 record in his second season at the helm, a four-game improvement from the 21-win season in 2017. It marks the fifth season since 2000 where the Hoosiers ended the year with a single digit in the loss column.

Matthews a four-time postseason honoree
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Immediately following the tournament final, the conference coaches made their selections for the All-CWPA Tournament team. Three IU players—senior Jessica Gaudreault, senior Kelly Matthews, and sophomore Joelle Nacouzi—were named to the 14-woman honor roll for their superlative efforts at Kinney Natatorium this weekend.
Gaudreault received first team accolades as the tournament's most outstanding goalkeeper, while Matthews and Nacouzi collected second team honors.
Averaging 10 saver per game with 30 in total, Gaudreault delivered a gem in her final weekend between the pipes for Indiana. The senior opened the tournament with a 12-save outing against Bucknell, including two steals and a pair of penalty shot saves. Following that was a 38-minute shift in the CWPA semifinals against No. 10 Princeton with nine saves and just one goal allowed in the first half.
Matthews didn't disappoint as a perennial standout at the conference postseason weekend, posting three crucial goals with one assist and five steals. She scored the opening goals against Princeton and Hartwick to become the first four-time All-CWPA tournament selection in program history.
Nacouzi hits the midpoint of a promising young career, earning CWPA postseason honors for the second time in as many years. The Montreal native led IU with nine points—five goals and four assists—along with five steals and three drawn ejections. Nacouzi scored twice in the last two games of the weekend and helped the Hoosiers gain an overtime lead against Princeton in the CWPA semifinals,
