Big Fifth Inning Proves Costly as Indiana Falls to Nebraska, 5-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A five-run fifth inning proved to be the difference as Indiana fell to Nebraska on Friday's series opener, 5-0. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Hoosiers and was their first conference loss of the season.

Indiana's lone hits of the day came from senior Rebecca Blitz and freshman Taylor Lambert as the Hoosiers were shut out for just the fifth time this season.

"Offensively, I thought we were too passive today," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "We weren't going up there throwing punches like we have been. We had a couple early opportunities that we didn't capitalize on but we didn't get many chances because we weren't aggressive at the plate."

The Huskers threated early as they loaded the bases with no outs in the second on a single, fielder's choice and error. However, a force out and pair of strikeouts from junior pitcher Tara Trainer left them loaded.

IU's first baserunner of the day came in the third as Lambert singled to centerfield and advanced on the way to third on a fielding error. However, she was left stranded.

Nebraska broke the scoreless stalemate in the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits, three walks and a pair of Hoosier errors. After a leadoff double by Gina Metzler and a walk to Alyvia Simmons, a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed Metzler to score. A bases-loaded walk to Tristen Edwards scored a second Husker run before a two-run double by Kaylan Jablonski made it 4-0. Jablonski's at-bat was prolonged due to a dropped foul ball on a pop-up. Sophomore Emily Goodin then stepped in for relief and gave up an RBI single to Rylie Unzicker before retiring the next three she saw to get out of the inning.

"Our goal to stay away from the big inning. We had three walks, an error on a routine play and a dropped foul ball that resulted in the big double. That was all preventable and controllable. Tip of the cap to Nebraska, they did a good job capitalizing on our mistakes there. That was the difference in that inning."

The final Hoosier hit of the game came as Blitz knocked a two-out single in the sixth, but she was left stranded.

Indiana and Nebraska return to action on Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. Admission to all home games is free of charge.
