BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball dropped the series finale to Nebraska on Sunday afternoon at Andy Mohr Field, falling to the Huskers, 2-1.
The Indiana offense was led by a 2-for-3 outing by senior Rebecca Blitz while junior Sarah Galovich, sophomore Katie Lacefield and freshman Taylor Lambert each collected a hit.
Indiana (14-23, 7-2 Big Ten) got on the board first on an RBI double to right center by Galovich in the second inning, scoring freshman Carolyn Kuhn. Kuhn was in running for Lacefield, who reached on a leadoff single up the middle.
"This is what you want on a Sunday, two good teams battling for the series," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "I liked how we came out, we scored first. Galovich had the clutch RBI after Rachel O'Malley was able to lay down the sacrifice to get us into scoring position."
The Hoosiers looked to add on to the advantage in the following frame after singles by Lambert and Blitz put runners on the corners with one out. However, Lambert was thrown out at home plate on a double steal attempt.
Nebraska (27-13, 5-4 Big Ten) tied the game up at 1-1 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Ally Riley to plate Kaylan Jablonski, who doubled to get on base.
Jablonski also got it done for the Huskers in the circle, tossing a complete game and allowing just five hits and one run while striking out four.
Nebraska took advantage of a Hoosier defensive miscue in the fifth to plate the game-winning run. After Gina Metzler led off with a single, she moved to second on a walk to Alyvia Simmons. After Tristen Edwards fouled out, the ensuing throw was off-target, allowing enough time for Metzler to score.
"We let them back in the ball game, we threw the ball away for the go-ahead run," said Stanton. "That's going to happen. Every team gets knocked down and it's about being first up. That's what we've seen with this group is they're continuing to get back up throughout these last few weeks. We're battling. We have the second half of our Big Ten season to go, but I like our fast start. I like where our ball club is right now and I'm excited to get to work this week."
Indiana returns to Andy Mohr Field on Tuesday as the Hoosiers play a non-conference doubleheader against Butler. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. and admission is free of charge.
