LINCOLN, Neb. – Indiana (31-15, 9-9) was limited to just five hits in a 5-2 loss to Nebraska in Friday night's series opener.
Senior Logan Sowers was 2-for-3 in the contest with a home run, while junior Matt Lloyd also collected two hits. Junior Jonathan Stiever allowed three earned runs over six innings, striking out eight, while senior Kade Kryzsko tossed two scoreless frames of relief.
Indiana loaded the bases in the top of the first which started with a single from Lloyd. After sophomore Matt Gorski was hit by a pitch, junior Ryan Fineman grounded one up the middle that bounced off the second base bag. Sowers worked a bases loaded walk with one out, but that is all the Hoosiers would get to make it 1-0.
Stiever had retired eight in a row before he walked Nebraska's Scott Schreiber with two outs. Jesse Wilkening then hit a two-run home run to the opposite field, puting the Cornhuskers ahead 2-1.
The Hoosiers answered right back in the fourth, as Sowers launched his sixth home run of the year to right to knot things up at two apiece.
With two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the fifth, Nebraska's Mojo Hagge singled and advanced on a throwing error. After walks to Schreiber and Wilkening, the cleanup hitter Luke Roskam reached on an error, allowing two runs to score.
Angelo Altavilla added to the lead with a leadoff home run in the sixth.
Indiana is back in action on Saturday at 3:05 p.m. from Haymarket Park.
