BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (38-16) trailed by five runs, but rallied and defeated the Michigan State Spartans, 6-5, on a walk-off RBI single by junior Wyatt Cross in the 10th inning. With the win, the Hoosiers advance in the Big Ten Tournament and will face the loser of Illinois and Minnesota on Friday.
Sophomore Matt Gorski, with the Hoosiers trailing by three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, hit the game-tying three-run home run.
Gorski recorded Indiana's lone multi-hit game and had four RBI in the win. Junior Matt Lloyd provided the other RBI and picked up the win as he tossed a scoreless top of the 10th. Freshman Tommy Sommer tossed two scoreless frames of relief to keep the Spartans in check.
In the top of the fourth, MSU got runners on second and third with no outs and followed that up with an RBI single to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Michigan State would go on to tack on two more runs to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
A pair of RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings would give the Spartans a 5-0 advantage. Indiana ended a 5.1 inning hitless stretch in the bottom of the sixth when Lloyd drove in sophomore Jeremy Houston, who walked earlier in the frame, making it a 5-1 game.
In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Scotty Bradley led off and pushed a single through the right side. After Houston was hit by a pitch, the next two hitters were retired on a flyout and strikeout. That led to Gorski's three-run home run, his eighth of the year, to knot the contest up at three.
With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Barr worked a full count and drilled a single up the middle. With Cross at the plate, he stole second and then scored on a bloop single to left field. Barr beat the throw home to give IU the 6-5 victory.
Indiana's contest with the Minnesota/Illinois loser will take place at 8:30 p.m. ET on Friday.
