Matthews ends career as a four-time All-American
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) announced this week their selections to the 2018 Division-I All-America Team. A pair of Indiana water polo seniors—Jessica Gaudreault and Kelly Matthews—collected honorable mention places on this year's All-America squad.
This marks the fourth consecutive season, the second under head coach Ryan Castle, in which the Hoosiers earned at least two All-American selections. Matthews completes a superlative career as a four-time All-American, the first in program history.
Matthews is one of the best to ever take the pool in the IU cap. The Roxboro, Quebec native scored 43 goals in 2018 with 40 assists and a team-leading 62 steals in her senior season. One of the focal points for Indiana's attack since her freshman year in 2015, Matthews either scored or assisted in 30-of-31 appearances and created three or more points (goals or assists) in 15 games. For her efforts in 2018, Matthews earned second team selections to the All-CWPA squad and the All-CWPA Tournament team.
With the award, Matthews is the first Hoosier to make the All-CWPA team, the All-CWPA Tournament team, and All-America in all four years of her career. Over the program's 18-year history, Matthews posted top-10 career totals for goals (250 – 2nd IU history), assists (148 – 3rd IU history), and steals (177 – 10th IU history), joining Shae Fournier (2011-14) and Jakie Köhli (2008-13) as the only Hoosiers to achieve the feat.
Gaudreault defended her standing as one of the world's top goalkeepers by playing like one of the best in the NCAA during the Hoosiers' 2018 campaign. Her 298 season saves featured 14 games with 10 or more blocks, a personal career best, alongside 31 steals and two assists from the cage. In all but six games last season, Gaudreault held Indiana's opponents to single-digit scoring figures and helped the Hoosiers to a 24-4 record in those contests.
Gaudreault was named the conference's top goalkeeper for both the regular season and postseason, earning three CWPA Defensive Player of the Week awards in 2018. Joining Cassie Wyckoff (2011-12) as the only All-American goalkeepers in program history, Gaudreault ranks second on IU's all-time career leaderboards for saves (975), shots faced (2,140), goalkeeper assists (35), and goalkeeper steals (97).
