ROSEMONT, Ill. – Indiana Women's Basketball senior forward Amanda Cahill (women's basketball) and Indiana Track and Field sophomore sprinter William Session (men's track and field) have been named Indiana's recipients of the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, announced by the league office on Thursday.
The pair was chosen as two of 28 honorees selected from a group of more than 350 students honored through the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution.
All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Cahill is an All-Big Ten second team selection and repeat CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017-18 as she helped Indiana Women's Basketball win the Women's National Invitational Tournament. She averaged 15.2 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game while finishing her career fourth in points (1,884), the all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage (38.7 percent), second in rebounds (1,115) and third in 3-pointers made (200) while finishing in the top 10 in three other categories.
The Clyde, Ohio native scored in double figures in 34 games with a team-high 11 double-doubles. She shot a team-high 48.7 percent from the floor and team-high 40.2 percent from 3-point range while averaging 2.8 assists per game, dishing out multiple assists in 25 games. Cahill also repeats as IU's female Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner, having earned the honor in 2017.
Session is a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier in the 110 meter hurdles. The Belleville, Ill native collected his first All-American honors at the 2018 NCAA Championships on Wednesday when he finished 16th overall. His lifetime best performance of 13.57 at the 2018 Big Ten Outdoor Championships earned him a silver medal and helped lead IU to a third place finish. Academically, the sophomore is pursuing a degree in media advertising.
