BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday that Indiana fifth-year senior offensive lineman Wes Martin earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The recipients are students who have recorded a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the 2017-18 academic year.
Sixth-five students from IU's athletic teams collected the honor. Indiana's total ranks second in school history, exceeded only by the 68 honorees a year ago.
"Congratulations to these sixty-five students for being recognized as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for their excellence in the classroom," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "We take great pride in seeing our students excel academically, and these students have performed at the very highest of levels. To have our two largest contingents of Big Ten Distinguished Scholars in back-to-back years is a credit to not only our students, but also our Academic Services and Excellence Academy staff for the tremendous work they do."
The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 1,009 students for the award from its 14 institutions in 37 sports.
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution. The Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only students with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
