BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The long tradition of head coach Mike Mayer and the Indiana men's golf team excelling in the classroom continued in 2017-18, as the team received the 18Birdies Team Academic Award from the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Hoosiers also had three individuals named to the Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars list – Jake Brown, Brendon Doyle and Jack Sparrow.
The team award marked the sixth consecutive year that the Hoosiers have earned the honor after posting a 3.00 team GPA during the 2017-18 season. To be eligible for Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
Brown, Doyle and Sparrow were three of the 265 NCAA Division I men's golfers to be named All-America Scholars. It is the first such honor for Brown and Sparrow while Doyle claimed the honor for the second straight season.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2.
