No. 2 Hoosiers Fall in Exhibition Opener to Xavier

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 2 Indiana University men's soccer team began the 2018 exhibition season with a three, 45-minute period match against Xavier on Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.
In a first, 45-minute closed period, Xavier netted two goals against a young group of Hoosiers. In the period, Indiana played with 10 freshmen or redshirt freshmen, a sophomore and a redshirt sophomore.
In the second, 45-minute period, the Hoosiers controlled possession but were unable to get on the scoreboard as neither team found the back of the net. Indiana out-shot the Musketeers, 3-1, in the period, with Ian Black getting a shot on goal in the early minutes.
Indiana dominated the third and final period, getting a goal from distance from redshirt freshman Joe Schmidt in the final minutes. In the last 45-minute segment, IU out-shot Xavier, 10-4, getting five shots on goal to just two for XU.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sean Caulfield had a pair of big saves for the Hoosiers in the final period to keep the Musketeers off the board.
Over 135 minutes of play on Sunday, Xavier defeated Indiana, 2-1. For the three periods, IU out-shot Xavier, 18-9, and had a 13-7 advantage in corner kicks. The Hoosiers had eight shots on goal, while the Musketeers had five.
The No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers will next be in action on Wednesday, Aug. 15 when the team faces No. 6 Louisville in an exhibition match in Westfield, Ind. The match will be played at Grand Park and is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. ET.
