Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Amanda Janney Misselhorn
On the preseason to date…
"I think it's been great, and we've gotten better every day of preseason. The freshmen are really starting to learn our structure, and we're getting sparks out of all of them."
On all four goals coming from freshmen…
"It's very encouraging to have everyone out there, but it's huge to see the younger players step up and produce this early in the season. Expectations for them will go up a little bit now because they're playing so well."
On the two goals scored by Megan Mahlandt…
"She got a lot of outcomes in the circle and it's great to see our young forwards scoring."
On the positive takeaways from preseason…
"We saw a lot of consistency and maturity from our upperclassmen. We have some great leadership from our four seniors, and Kelsey Giese and Andi Jackson are really stepping up. Andi has been a good surprise in preseason as she's taken leadership in that center midfield spot."
On the battle for starting goalkeeper…
"It's a really strong goalie battle and that's exactly what we want. We have two young goalkeepers and they both have different strengths, so it's been great to see them play to those strengths."
On improvements since the spring season…
"We're scoring more goals. That's something we have to do, obviously, but we didn't get as many goals in the spring season as we wanted. Our forwards are producing more, but our center mids are doing a great job to set that up. Andi, Rylee, and Ciara are doing better as they've gotten older. I think you'll see better passing in our midfield this year."
Who is the biggest surprise of the preseason?
"Jes McGivern has been the biggest surprise of the preseason for us. She's a hustler, she's earned a spot in our starting lineup. She's creative in the midfield and gets positive outcomes. We're excited that a freshman is going to unexpectly earn so much playing time early in the season."
Who will step in to replace the goals from 2017 graduate Maddie Latino?
"We're pretty deep on the front line, which is great. It was good to see Hailey score a goal against Saint Louis. Claire Woods has stepped up a ton as a leader on the front line. We're excited because we don't know where the goals are going to come from, but we have a lot of killer forwards."
How well do you think this team will handle the pressure and talent of the Big Ten?
"We're off to a good start. We're already in a better position than we have been in the past, so we're expecting big things to happen in our conference play this year."
Junior Kelsey Giese
How has the team improved from Tuesday's scrimmage at Saint Louis to now?
"We've made a lot of positive strides since Tuesday and cleaned up a lot of the basics that we needed to improve. Our communication has sharpened and we've seen a lot of great play from the freshmen so far. They've been great sparks and appear to be integrating with the team's game plan."
On playing the full 90-minutes compared to the rotations against another opponent…
"We definitely had tired points, but that's when we played a little smarter and let the ball do the work. That's going to be important for us late in the season when we have to play 90 minutes, so it's great preparation."
Feelings on entering the junior season…
"That's definitely the case, although I didn't really think I was that shy my freshman or sophomore years. My role has changed a little bit more this year, and now I'm more of a leader on the field. I think we have a really good team this year so we're excited to get into the games."
How have the freshmen looked so far in the preseason?
"Fast. Speedy. It's nice when I'm playing back to have some girls who can turn it on and have some speed up the field. That's something we've struggled with in the past so it's great to see them use their speed and stick skills. The goals they scored today shows how much they mean to this year's team."
What's been the key to your attacking success this preseason?
"It's all because of my team with everyone building each other up. Even when I play in the backfield, I'm going to go when I see an opportunity because I have that attacking mindset. It's nice to have player behind me that encourage me to go up into the circle, knowing that they have my back on the other end."
On new strength coach Laine Deppe…
"She brings a ton of energy no matter what time it is, whether it's six in the morning or six at night. She's always excited and ready to get after it, which has encouraged us to be positive and work with that energy. It's nice having her around all the time because her energy is constantly there and she doesn't let it fall."
Freshman Hailey Couch
On scoring two goals so far in the preseason…
"It helps a lot having the people behind me who direct and encourage me. They've been so open to having me on the first team, which has helped my transition."
On adjusting to the college level…
"It's all about adapting to the style of college play, which is a lot faster and more physically demanding. The girls are doing a great job of taking me under their wing so I don't look disoriented out there."
On your teammates in the freshman class…
"This class is coming in with big goals and a lot of good intentions, so having a strong mind and a lot of energy when we're out there on the field is making a big difference. We don't want to settle for anything less, and we want to make sure we're contributing to the team."
On the veteran players aiding the transition…
"A lot of the upperclassmen guided us along the way and were open with helping us both on and off the field with whatever we needed. That really helped to gel the team."
