Game Notes: Indiana Opens Season at FIU

Setting The Scene
•Indiana kicks off its 134th season of football at Florida International on Saturday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. EDT at Riccardo Silva Stadium (20,000; FieldTurf) on CBSSN.
•The teams also opened the 2016 campaign in Miami on Sept. 1, as the Hoosiers scored a 34-13 triumph.
•IU leads the all-time series, 3-0, after it earned a 36-22 victory on Sept. 12, 2015, in Bloomington.
•The teams were scheduled to meet at Memorial Stadium last year, but the game was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. That game has been rescheduled for Aug. 31, 2024, in Bloomington.
•The Hoosiers return 16 starters from 2017, including 11 on offense, four on defense and one on special teams.
•FIU returns 14 starters from 2017, including six on offense, four on defense and four on special teams.
•The Panthers went 8-5 (5-3; 2nd C-USA East) with a trip to the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl in 2017.
The Coaches
•Tom Allen was named Indiana's head coach on Dec. 1, 2016, and made his debut at the 2016 Foster Farms Bowl. The New Castle, Ind., native joined IU as associate head coach/defense on Jan. 15, 2016. Since his arrival, the Hoosiers are the most improved team nationally in total defense and passing defense, the sixth-most improved in third down defense and the ninth-most improved in points per game allowed. •Butch Davis went 8-5 (.615) in his first season as Florida International head coach. He owns a 71-48 (.597) overall mark with additional stops at Miami (1995-2000) and North Carolina (2007-10). Davis went 24-35 (.407) from 2001-04 with the Cleveland Browns.

•Indiana will wear a helmet decal to honor Bill Mallory, the program's all-time winningest coach, who passed away in Bloomington on May 25, 2018.
•IU has won 12 of its last 14 season openers.
•The Hoosiers have won 11 of its last 12 non-conference games, including a perfect 3-0 mark in 2017, and four straight on the road - Virginia (2017), Florida International (2016), Wake Forest (2015) and Missouri (2014).
•Indiana has met 10 top 10 and six top five teams in its last 34 games. IU has faced five additional top 20 teams in that span.
•The Hoosiers finished first nationally in three-and-outs (6.5), ninth in third down defense (29.9 percent – best program mark since 1992; 3rd in the Big Ten), 17th in passing defense (179.7 ypg – best program mark since 1995; 4th in the Big Ten) and 26th in total defense (340.1 ypg – best program mark since 1995) last year.
