Hoosiers Win Season Opener at FIU, 38-28

MIAMI – The Indiana football team triumphed in their season opener at Riccardo Silva Stadium, a 38-28 win over Florida International on Saturday night. The Hoosiers (1-0) utilized a high-flying offense to build a 28-14 over the Panthers (0-1) by halftime and kept their lead thanks to excellent play from the quarterback position.
Redshirt sophomore Peyton Ramsey paced the Hoosier offense through the first half with 156 passing yards and three touchdowns, completing 20-of-27 attempts with 36 rushing yards. Freshman Michael Penix Jr. carried the load in the second half, connecting on 8-of-10 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown pass to senior Mike Majette.
Two of Ramsey's touchdown passes went to redshirt junior Donovan Hale, who finished the night with 60 yards on four catches. The third was a bullet pass to redshirt freshman Peyton Hendershot, his first touchdown as a Hoosier.
The IU defense disrupted the Panthers with three takeaways and five tackles for loss. Senior Jonathan Crawford notched his 14th career takeaway with an interception in the first quarter, while freshman Devon Matthews and redshirt senior Nile Sykes emerged with fumble recoveries. Redshirt sophomore Jerome Johnson earned a strip sack in the third quarter, the second sack of his career.
Up next, Indiana returns to Memorial Stadium for their home opener on Saturday, September 8 against the Virginia Cavaliers (1-0). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
