BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer mounted a late comeback to begin Big Ten play with a 3-2 victory in double overtime against Michigan on Thursday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Junior Chandra Davidson netted the golden goal for the Hoosiers with 2:35 to play in the second overtime.
KEY MOMENTS
• Trailing 2-0, IU scored a pair of goals in the final 4:36 of regulation to send the game to overtime.
• Senior Abby Allen put the Hoosiers on the board first with her team-leading sixth goal of the season. After senior Caroline Dreher went wide, she served the ball in to the head of sophomore Melanie Forbes, who sent it on to Allen. Using her left foot, Allen tapped it in from eight yards out.
• Just 2:18 later, Indiana found the equalizer on a corner kick as Dreher served in a perfect ball to graduate transfer Claudia Day, who headed it in to the near post from four yards out.
• The game-winner for the Hoosiers came after Forbes fooled the Michigan defender at the top of the box, driving in before slotting the ball to a charging Davidson, who slid inside for the finish in the 108th minute.
• Michigan jumped to a 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game thanks to Reilly Martin. The Wolverines doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute on a goal by Sarah Stratigakis.
NOTABLES
• Indiana improved to 5-1-2 on the season with a 1-0 Big Ten mark, while Michigan fell to 4-4-0 with a 0-1 conference record.
• The game marked the first double overtime victory for the Hoosiers since Sept. 21, 2014 against Northwestern. It's the first in overtime since a 1-0 victory at Illinois in 2016, when Mykayla Brown scored the winner in the 92nd minute.
• The victory is the first for Indiana against Michigan since 2008.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Bethany Kopel had a season-high 10 saves. Day also provided a key goal line team save in the 57th minute.
• Day's goal in the 88th minute was the first for her in a Hoosier uniform and the second of her career as she netted a score while at Wake Forest.
QUOTABLE
"We had to do what we could to get through and fight to come back on top. We never stopped believing and we knew we had it inside of us. We just dug deep and kept pushing.
Coach is always telling us to take the ball to the line so I saw the lane and saw my chance because I only had a player on me. I took it down the line, saw Chanie right in the middle and just wanted to complete that pass."
-- Sophomore Melanie Forbes
"If I had one word to describe this group, I'd say 'resilient.' Today we asked them to focus on the task on the hand, re-focus as we began our Big Ten season against a very, very good opponent who has many dynamic players on hand. We made some tactical adjustments at halftime and what I'm so proud of with this group is they can take information like that and change the game.
We've been talking about it since last January. We're tired of being so close. If you look at our results from last year, we were very close. Lots of one-goal games. That's something that's been a point of contention for us since January – figuring out a way to finish and get it done. As I looked at those kids at the break between overtimes, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that we weren't going to let our mind take over our body and we were going to fight to the finish."
