BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana football team welcomes the Virginia Cavaliers to Memorial Stadium for the 2018 home opener this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on BTN.
Each week we will compile five quotes and storylines recapping the previous game and previewing the upcoming one.
"Feels great to get our first win of the season and on the road, so very happy for our players and how hard they worked and all that they put into that first game, and coaches included. So with a typical first game, you had positives and negatives and things you want to build off of and things you want to correct and improve on this week. So we'll be starting that process today (Monday)," said head coach Tom Allen.
The 2018 season kicked off in Miami and saw IU start the year with a 38-28 victory over Florida International last Saturday. The beginning of the season also brought chances for new players to make an impact on the team as 16 Hoosiers played in their first college game. Although every win is big, Allen didn't take long to savor it as Virginia is up next.
"(The wide receivers) did a really good job. We have so many big-time playmakers, so many guys who can just go take the ball out of the air and get open. As a quarterback, that's what you dream about - to have so many guys that you can distribute the ball to and just go make plays," said redshirt sophomore quarterback Peyton Ramsey.
With the offensive reigns in Ramsey's, the second year-quarterback had plenty of weapons to choose from last Saturday as 10 players recorded a catch. Fifth-year senior Luke Timian led the Hoosiers with six catches followed by redshirt junior Nick Westbrook and sophomore Ty Fryfogle with five receptions. Redshirt junior Donavan Hale found the end zone twice as he tallied 60 yards in his home state.
"Have to announce that Cole Gest has torn his ACL and will be out for the season. Hate it for him, I know how hard he's worked and played extremely well when he was in there and a great, great person, works unbelievably hard and, obviously, has a setback now he has to handle. We'll be with him side by side through this whole process and he'll come back stronger than ever and he'll be with us again in the future. So thoughts and prayers with him through this time," said Allen.
For the second straight year, Indiana lost a key component of its offense in the season's first game. Last year, wide receiver Nick Westbrook was lost for the season after his injury against Ohio State. This season, redshirt sophomore running back Cole Gest suffered a torn ACL. Like last year, the wide receiving corps stepped up, something the running backs room has already started to do. Enter true freshman Stevie Scott.
"Stevie (Scott) you know for his first game out there - and he really didn't get as many reps leading up to that in training camp and then at the end of training camp he started getting a lot more reps. I just think he'll do nothing but continue to get better," said offensive coordinator Mike DeBord.
Although having limited reps in preseason camp, Scott touched the ball 20 times against FIU and gained 70 yards. In addition to Scott, the Hoosiers had six players with attempts and totaled 213 yards.
"I feel like during camp, takeaways were a big emphasis for us. I feel like we did that in the first game of the season. I think I just wanted to start it up as a senior on the team, a leader on our defense. I had to," said senior safety Jonathan Crawford.
The offense wasn't the only unit to make an impact on the scoreboard. Six of the 38 points scored by the Hoosiers on Saturday came from Crawford intercepting an FIU pass in the first quarter and returning it 33 yards for a touchdown. This came after the Largo, Fla. native forced a fumble on the opening drive that was picked up by safety Devon Matthews. Crawford's two takeaway night marked the fifth game in his career in which he had multiple takeaways.
