CHICAGO – Indiana University men's soccer's Griffin Dorsey and Rece Buckmaster were selected on day one of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft on Friday afternoon.
Dorsey was selected by Toronto FC with the sixth overall pick in the first round, while Buckmaster was taken by New York Red Bulls with the eighth pick (32nd overall) of the second round.
Dorsey and Buckmaster become the 46th and 47th Indiana players selected in the MLS Draft since the league's inception in 1996. In modern MLS SuperDraft era dating back to 2000, Dorsey is the 12th Hoosier to be taken in the first round.
IU has had five players selected in the last four MLS SuperDrafts after Mason Toye was taken Minnesota United FC last year, Tanner Thompson was selected by Minnesota United FC 2017 and Femi Hollinger-Janzen was drafted by the New England Revolution in the 2016 SuperDraft.
Earlier this month, Dorsey signed a Generation adidas deal with Major League Soccer, foregoing his final two seasons of eligibility with the Hoosiers. Generation adidas is a joint program between MLS and adidas which sees a handful of top collegiate underclassmen and youth national team players signed by MLS to Generation adidas contracts and made available in the SuperDraft.
In 2018, Dorsey was a unanimous All-America selection, earning second-team honors from the United Soccer Coaches and College Soccer News and third-team honors from Top Drawer Soccer. A First-Team All-Big Ten and All-North Region selection, Dorsey totaled five goals and five assists on the season, earning starts in 19 of 21 matches.
The Evergreen, Colo. Native had a tremendous freshman year for Indiana in 2017, starting all 23 matches, totaling three goals and six assists. For his efforts, Dorsey was named a Freshman All-American by Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News and was named Second-Team All-Big Ten.
A four-year contributor for the Hoosiers, Buckmaster had his best season in Bloomington this past season, earning Second-Team All-Big Ten honors. The Auburn, Ind. native totaled four goals and three assists on the year, starting 22 of the 24 matches he appeared in for Indiana.
For his career, Buckmaster saw action in 82 matches, earning 53 starts. He scored five goals over his four seasons and added 12 assists. A key member of the Hoosier defense, Buckmaster helped IU post 54 shutouts over the course of his career.
The 2019 MLS SuperDraft will continue with the third and fourth rounds on Monday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. ET via conference call.
