Hoosiers Can’t Hold On Late, Fall To Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A last second attempt to tie the game went thwarted as Indiana fell to Purdue, 56-53, on Sunday afternoon at Mackey Arena.
KEY MOMENTS
- Indiana (15-4, 4-3 B1G) got out to a 5-2 lead with sophomore guard Jaelynn Penn scoring all five through the media timeout. After a pair of ties, freshman forward Aleksa Gulbe knocked down a triple to regain the lead with 1:44 to play. But the two teams would end the first 10 minutes of play tied, 14-14.
- IU held its largest lead in the game, a seven-point advantage as Berger grabbed a defensive rebound and took it all the way to the rack with 6:20 to play.
- The Boilermakers (14-6, 5-2 B1G) would come within as few as one but Yeaney with a pair at the line and senior forward Kym Royster drained a baseline jumper to end the first half putting IU up 32-27.
- Out of the half, Purdue started things off with an 8-0 run and go up by 3, 35-32, with 7:51 remaining. Yeaney would answer with her only 3-pointer of the day to tie it at 35-all. The Hoosiers, however, would find themselves back in a hole back down four with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- A Penn floater and 3-pointer from sophomore guard Keyanna Warthen pushed the Hoosiers back within one, 44-43, to end the third. In the fourth, back-to-back buckets from Yeaney and Penn gave IU the 47-46 edge.
- Holding a 49-47 lead with 4:51 to play, Indiana would put Purdue into the bonus for the remainder of the game. Two leads would be exchanged as the Hoosiers also got into the bonus with Yeaney hitting a pair with 2:15 to play, putting IU ahead 53-51. But one in the bonus and a drive by Karissa McLaughlin with 26 seconds remaining was the difference as the Boilers added two more at the line to close the game.
NOTABLE
- Sophomore guard Bendu Yeaney led Indiana with 15 points
- Sophomore guard Jaelynn Penn also added double figures for IU, scoring 13 points
- Redshirt junior forward Brenna Wise and senior forward Kym Royster led on the glass with seven rebounds each. Wise also added nine points.
- Sophomore guard Keyanna Warthen came off the bench for a season-high five points.
- The game featured seven lead changes and 11 ties.
- Indiana shot just 38.2 percent on the afternoon and were outrebounded, 32-30.
