CHICAGO – The Chicago Fire Club announced on Tuesday that they have signed Indiana University men's soccer's Jeremiah Gutjahr to a Homegrown Player contract.
Gutjahr wrapped up his four-year career with the Hoosiers with a great season, helping Indiana reach the NCAA College Cup for the second-straight season and win both the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships.
"Jeremiah epitomizes the word professional in his daily preparation, academic work and training habits," Indiana head men's soccer coach Todd Yeagley remarked. "He wore the IU jersey with pride over the past four years, helping to build upon our tradition of excellence at Indiana University. Jeremiah will now live out his childhood dream of playing for the Chicago Fire. The Indiana Fire DA played a large role in his development and now he's able to play alongside the professional players he once watched and admired as a youth player."
A defensive midfielder for the Hoosiers, Gutjahr appeared in 71 career matches, earning 44 starts. The Bloomington, Ind. native totaled two goals and three assists during his career and helped Indiana post a staggering 54 shutouts over the last four seasons. Gutjahr was also a standout in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors three times.
"With family ties to the university and having been born in Bloomington, Indiana University has been a large part of my entire life, Gutjahr said. "I remember going to games as a six-year-old, and dreaming that one day I would be playing in those games. When I was young, the players on those teams were my role models. As I got older those players became my teammates. I wouldn't be the player and more importantly the person I am today without these influences in my life. Fifteen years later, my time in this special place has finally ended, but this university and program will always be a part of me. Thank you to the entire Yeagley family, thank you to every coach and staff member that I have ever learned from in my time here. And finally, thank you to each and every one of my teammates. I will always be grateful for the opportunity that I had to wear the jersey and be an Indiana University soccer player."
Gutjahr is the sixth player in Indiana history to sign a Homegrown Player contract, joining Justin Rennicks (New England Revolution, 2019), Trey Muse (Seattle Sounders FC, 2019), Grant Lillard (Chicago Fire, 2018), Patrick Doody (Chicago Fire, 2015) and Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes, 2014).
