NEWS & NOTES
IU is rated 48th in the NET. Michigan State (11), IU and Purdue (10) are among the national leaders in games played against Quadrant 1 teams. IU is completing a stretch where it played 6-of-8 on the road from Jan. 6 to Feb. 2, and will have played 7 of its first 11 league games on the road. IU finishes the season with 6 of 9 at home beginning February 7.
Senior forward Juwan Morgan and freshman guard Romeo Langford were selected to the 10-member Preseason All-Big Ten team. Both are among 50 players listed as candidates for the 2019 Naismith Trophy and Langford is among 20 players on the NABC Player of the Year watch list and 25 players up for the Wooden Award. Langford was named third-team Preseason All-American by ESPN.com and CBSSports.com and earned fourth-team honors from WatchStadium.com. Morgan also is up for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award.
Langford is the top freshman scorer in the conference averaging 17.3 ppg. He had 20 points and 6 rebounds at Rutgers. He has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week 4 times. Morgan earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors and USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week accolades after his record-setting 35-point effort against Butler. He has scored 1,174 career points (39th all-time at IU) and is 4th in the B1G in double-doubles with 8. In his last three games, Morgan is averaging 16.3 points and 10.0 rebounds.
After ranking as high as 2nd in the nation in field goal shooting a few weeks ago, the Hoosiers have shot just 35.9% in their last 5 games. IU still ranks second in the Big Ten in shooting (47.9%). While Langford, Morgan, and sophomore Justin Smith have started all 21 games for the Hoosiers, rotation players (top 10 in minutes played) have missed 21 games due to injury, illness or discipline. In addition, freshman Race Thompson (concussion/strep throat) has missed the last 19 games and freshman Jerome Hunter (leg surgery) has not played.
ESPN College Gameday will be on site when the Hoosiers take on Michigan State on Saturday. This is the third time IU has played when Gameday is on-site. IU defeated Michigan State at home (2008) and Michigan at home (2013) in the other two times.
