BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University men's soccer's Andrew Gutman signed a professional contract with Celtic F.C. of the Scottish Premiership on Thursday. Gutman, the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy winner, will join Nashville SC of the USL on loan.
A unanimous First-Team All-American and selection as Big Ten Defender of the Year and First-Team All-Big Ten, Gutman also earned First-Team All-North Region accolades this season. Gutman led the Hoosiers with 11 goals on the season to go with nine assists.
"It's exciting to see a traditional power from Europe see the potential in Andrew," Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley remarked. "With an opportunity to keep developing in Nashville, Andrew's trajectory is high as he begins his professional career. All of us at Indiana are really proud of Andrews' development during his four years at IU. I would expect the U.S. National Team will be watching Andrew closely."
Along with all his offensive efforts, Gutman was one of the best defenders in the country, helping the Hoosiers post a NCAA-best 15 shutouts on the season and allow just 13 goals on the year.
"First, I'd like to thank Indiana University for the last four years, allowing me to receive a valuable education while also giving me the tools necessary to succeed in the sport I love," Gutman said. "I'd also like to thank coach Yeagley and the rest of the staff. Thank you for always believing in me and helping me grow as a player and a person. Thank you to all my teammates for constantly pushing me to get the best version of myself day in and day out. Lastly, thank you to my family for supporting me from the start. I couldn't be more excited to join Celtic F.C., as I believe this is the best decision and opportunity in order for me to grow as a player. Indiana, you will always hold a special place in my heart and I am forever in debt to you."
For his career, the Hinsdale, Ill. native started all 90 matches he appeared in for the Hoosiers, scoring 20 goals with 17 assists. He also helped Indiana register 54 shutouts over the course of his four seasons with the Cream & Crimson.
