BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore guard Jaelynn Penn's clutch 3-pointer with 47 seconds remaining helped Indiana defeat No. 15/17 Michigan State, 68-64, on Sunday afternoon in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
KEY MOMENTS
- The Hoosiers trailed by four after one quarter coming out slow by shooting just 25 percent from the floor.
- In the second, Indiana regrouped and found its rhythm, shooting 60 percent including a 3-for-3 mark from the 3-point line. They face their largest deficit of the day, falling behind by seven with just under six minutes to go. A Patberg 3-pointer, bucket and a Gulbe turn-around jumper tied the game up at 22-all. The Spartans pushed their lead back up to three but freshman guard Grace Berger's back-to-back baskets made it a 28-27 lead.
- It sparked a 9-0 run that lasted until the final seconds of the quarter as Penn took it coast-to-coast in 4.4 seconds to beat the buzzer and put the Hoosiers up 33-27.
- Indiana built an eight-point lead less than three minutes in to the third quarter as Penn was found wide open by Patberg underneath the basket with 7:53 remaining.
- But the Spartans (11-3, 1-2 B1G) would tighten the gap, as they would go on a 6-0 run with 1:29 t0 play and take back the lead briefly. Berger would dish it downlow to a wide-open Gulbe who hit the left side lay-in and regained IU's lead back with 1:16 to play. A pair at the line by Wise, two of her 9-for-10 performance at the line on the day, helped her team keep the 48-47 lead with ten minutes to go.
- In a back-and-forth fourth quarter that saw eight lead changes, Indiana got the upper-hand with 47 seconds remaining as she spotted up on the left side 3-point line on a feed from Yeaney and drained it. A 3-point attempt by Michigan State was off the mark with seven seconds to go as In Patberg and Wise combined to go 3-for-4 in the bonus down the stretch.

QUOTABLE
Indiana head coach Teri Moren
"What an exciting game. I would like to start off first by thanking our tremendous crowd. We needed them in the worst way. What a terrific team Michigan State is and will continue to be. I just thought the energy in the building was something very special. It was reminiscent of some of our WNIT games. We needed every bit of everybody's energy. I am really proud of our basketball team and how we conducted ourselves throughout the game. Again, Michigan State is really good, and we have a tremendous amount of respect for them. It was like a heavyweight boxing match and everybody was taking their best punches at each other. Obviously, Jaelynn Penn hit that big three to give us a lot of energy and a lot of life on a broken play. We have seen her do that before. Overall, just really pleased and happy about the outcome and happy that we can do it in front of such a great crowd."
