BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Golf is paying tribute to a fallen soldier through the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program. The initiative provides the opportunity for Indiana to honor a fallen or severely wounded American soldier by having a team member carry a golf bag with the name, rank and branch of service of a chosen soldier.
The Hoosiers are honoring Army Sergeant First Class Michael A. Shahadey, who served in the Army from 1981 until retirement in 2006. Shahadey, who was the Supply Sergeant, was stationed all over the world, including serving in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Iraq.
As a team, Indiana votes on who should carry the bag for each competition based on who has displayed true leadership qualities. At the end of the season, the Hoosiers will work to raise money to support the Folds of Honor program by auctioning off the bag.
"We felt it was important to honor Sergeant Shahadey and the United States military through the Folds of Honor program," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We are grateful for his service and are proud to honor him in this way. This is a great organization with a noble cause and we are excited to support it all season by having a representative on our team carry this special golf bag."
