Indiana vs. Nebraska
Oct. 26, 2019
Indiana Head Coach Tom Allen
Opening Statement…
"I got really tired of standing in front of you all and talking how close we are and being disappointed and trying to figure out how I am going to spin it the right way when I know I was just torn up on the inside. It feels pretty stinkin' good to stand here and answer your questions after a big-time road win for the Hoosiers. I don't really even care what anyone else thinks. This is big. This means a whole lot to our program and changes a lot of things with our guys."
On playing at Nebraska…
"This is a pretty awesome place to play. I had never been here before, never been to Lincoln - never coached here, never played here, nothing. It was an awesome crowd and they were so stinking loud. But it was a pretty special night."
On what the team expected from Nebraska…
"Well we felt like we really knew running was going to be hard, based on their alignments, their mass, and the strength of their defense. So, you'll notice we didn't really ram our heads into the wall to try and force it. We still continued to run the ball, but we found things we could take advantage of in the pass game and they proved to be true. But you still have to execute, you still have to make catches. We felt like we could throw the football, and we were able to, but as the game comes you have to adjust and they do different things and start bringing different coverages and pressures and you have to adapt."
On the players' attitudes about playing Nebraska…
"Some things were said before about Indiana, and us playing Nebraska. You look at the history and it is just not the same. They are just not the same. Our guys took that personal."
On Nebraska's offense…
"They did. Trick plays, I mean tempo within the trick plays. By the time I was trying to figure out what happened in the last play, they did another one. They kind of got us on our heels and that is tough. I was frustrated, (Defensive coordinator) Kane (Wommack) was frustrated, we are all frustrated. They were trying to get that energy going fast and I knew that they had to do that to try and get some momentum going. I just said 'guys, weather the storm, weather the storm and then let's just go play football.' I'll watch the film and see how we did on all that, but it was a tough start for us and not the way you want to start on the road."
Peyton Ramsey, Quarterback
On Nebraska's pass defense…
"I don't think it had anything to do with their defense. I think it had a lot to do with our skilled guys. How much we believe in them on the perimeter and inside on the one-on-one match-ups. I think that's what it came down to. We had a really good game plan to prepare for it. All the credit to our guys."
On Indiana's running game late…
"I think that's a credit to how well we threw the ball and how we spread them out and opening those lanes. Credit to the entire team just continuing to push through the fourth quarter game like we knew it was going to be and taking what they gave us, just trying to get the job done."
On Nebraska's defense…
"They didn't do a whole lot different [than in film], and that's a credit to our coaches for preparing us. They mixed some up here and there with a blitz. For the most part, we didn't see anything too different, so we just rolled with the game plan and in the end, it worked out for us."
Whop Philyor, Wide Receiver
On the road win…
"Mentally, it shows that we can beat anyone right now. We're doing exactly what we need to be doing. I'm so proud of my team right now. I'm so happy. All wins are big, but this is probably the biggest one because this is a big stadium. Everyone is against us here. This is big because it got us to be bowl eligible."
On the unsportsmanlike penalty…
"I just have to be more disciplined. I let my emotions get the best of me, so I have to be more disciplined. We're playing football so everyone's emotions are high."
On the energy in Memorial Stadium…
"It was a lot. This is the loudest stadium I've ever played in. But we feed off that energy. This is what we do."
