NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Bennett Crane defeated the No. 1 seed on his way to a runner-up finish at the ITA Regional Championships hosted this past weekend by Vanderbilt.
With his finish at the regional tournament, Crane has now qualified for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. That event will take place Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif.
"I was really proud of how Bennett competed this weekend," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "He had great composure and showed maturity in big moments throughout the tournament."
Crane won five matches on his way to the final including a win against No. 1 seed and No. 40 nationally ranked Athell Bennett in the semi-final. In the quarter final he earned a victory over No. 4 seed and No. 116 nationally ranked Kento Yamada of Kentucky. In that match, Crane trailed 6-4, 4-1 and came back to win the match, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Sophomore Carson Haskins won five matches en route to winning the consolation draw at the tournament.
Overall Wurtzman said the team is building confidence and creating a strong bond.
"Our main focus this fall was to come together as a team," Wurtzman said. "We are developing into a strong unit and that will help us a lot this spring when we play our dual matches."
Next up Crane competes in the National Fall Championship and the rest of the team competes at Harvard Nov. 8-10.
