LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Indiana Softball placed 13 Hoosiers on the 2018-19 Easton/All-America Scholar-Athlete list, while also posting the second-highest team GPA (3.48) of any Big Ten school.
To be eligible for Scholar-Athlete honors, a student-athlete must post a GPA of 3.50 or higher during the academic year. Taylor Askland, Annika Baez, Paige Chitwood, Karly Combs, Makayla Ferrari, Sarah Galovich, Sydney Hester, Gabbi Jenkins, Carolyn Kuhn, Bella Norton, Grayson Radcliffe, Tara Trainer and Camryn Woodall each earned the honor.
The team GPA was tied for 44th in country.
"When our staff arrived in Bloomington, we discussed with our student-athletes that with the academic reputation of Indiana University, the experience of this college town, the beautiful campus, and the Hoosier resources that are available, being a top 25 program, both academically and athletically should be an expectation," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "We strive to win in the classroom, on the field and in the community and in just our second season, we are trending in the right direction toward that standard of excellence having finished as a top 55 program academically and athletically as well as winning the Excellence Academy award this past year."
When Stanton was hired in the summer of 2017, the team was coming off a season with a final RPI of 126. In two seasons, that number has improved dramatically with Indiana finishing the 2019 season 53rd in the RPI. The Hoosiers are coming off a 2019 campaign in which they posted the most victories since 2011, as well as the best non-conference mark since 1986. Indiana spent six straight weeks in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, reaching as high as No. 16 after starting the season a program-record 14-0.
