Elston Taking New Position Outside of Basketball
Indiana University Men's Basketball Director of Player Development Derek Elston has taken a new position with United Fidelity Bank in Carmel as a Community Development Officer. He had been in his capacity with IU basketball since, October, 2015 and today is his last day with the program.
Elston's duties which included player mentoring and life skills programing, administrative operations, and involvement in the program's support services will be split up and divided amongst current staff for the remainder of the season.
"I couldn't thank Coach Crean enough for bringing me back and Coach Miller for allowing me to continue to be part of the program and helping me grow as a professional," said Elston. "At this time in my life, I think this an opportunity that I believe is beneficial for my family and I can't pass up. I've loved working with our players and staff and I'm excited for what this group can accomplish this season and in the future."
A native of Tipton, Elston played four years for the Hoosiers (09-13) and was a member of the 2013 Big Ten Championship squad and 2012 Sweet Sixteen team. He battled injuries throughout his career and scored 498 points and shot 37.5 percent from three-point range, including 55.2% from long distance as a junior. As a senior, he was named Academic All-Big Ten and received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
"Derek has been a loyal and invaluable member of our staff and we are excited for him and his new career path," noted Miller. "He's had a great impact on what we are trying to do and we want nothing but the best for he and Caroline and their family in the future."
Following his time at IU as a player, Elston played two seasons professionally overseas. He played for Illiabum in Portugal and averaged 13.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in 24.7 minutes of action per game. He also shot 81.5 percent from the line.
