OAKVILLE, Ont. – Indiana women's golf junior Mary Parsons has been named to the Team Canada 2020 National Amateur Squad. Parsons is just one of four on the women's squad, which is selected based on objective performance results reviewed by a committee.
Most recently, Parsons competed with Team Canada at the 2019 Pan American Games this past summer in Lima, Peru, There, she helped Canada win the first-ever medal in golf with a bronze finish in the team standings. Individually, Parsons finished fifth out of 32 women's golfers with a 72-hole score of 2-over par after rounds of 68-73-75-70. Her opening round 68 gave her the lead after day one and also tied for the low score of the tournament.
Parsons is a native of Delta, British Columbia and is the most recent Hoosier to receive this honor as Elizabeth Tong was a member of the 2015 team.
The Team Canada program is year-round in scope and encompasses fitness, sports psychology, nutrition, technique, equipment and international competition. Leaders in the field of sport science have been a part of building the program and continue in the ongoing execution of the program from the perspective of mental performance coaching, strength and conditioning, equipment as well as planning and periodization. A full-time national coach works with each team.
The intent of the comprehensive Team Canada high performance program – which includes an Amateur Squad, Junior Squad, and the new Young Pro Squad – is to aid Canada's top up-and-coming athletes in all areas of their development, helping Canada produce the best golfers in the world.
