
Schlereth to Receive B1G’s Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Former Indiana defensive lineman (1985-88) LTC (R) Doug Schlereth is this year's recipient of the Big Ten's Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award, the conference announced today.
Wisconsin's J.J. Watt is the Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award honoree. These awards recognize Big Ten football students who have achieved success in the areas of leadership and humanitarianism following their academic and athletic careers at a Big Ten university.
LTC (R) Schlereth was a four-year letterwinner, where he started in three bowl games: All-American Bowl (1986), Peach Bowl (1988) and the Liberty Bowl (1988). LTC (R) Schlereth finished his career with 138 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five fumble recoveries.
LTC (R) Schlereth was commissioned through Federal Officer Candidate School in 1990 upon graduating from Indiana University.
LTC (R) Schlereth most recently served as Structure and Analysis Staff Officer at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he retired with 29 years of military service on Sept. 1, 2019. His other assignments included service as the Station and Plans Officer at the Headquarters Department of the Army (HQDA) G-3, 5, 7, Pentagon, HQDA G-8 Operations Branch Chief in the Pentagon and the HQDA G-8 Liaison Officer (LNO) to the U.S. Army Central Command (USARCENT), Kuwait.
LTC (R) Schlereth is a graduate of Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JCWS) and the Command and General Staff College (CGSC). He holds a Master of Arts in Homeland Security from the American Public (Military) University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications with a Business Minor degree from Indiana University.
His military awards and decorations include Meritorious Service Medal (four oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Medal (two oak leaf clusters), Army Achievement Medal (one oak leaf cluster), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (mobilization device), National Defense Service Medal (one bronze star), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (three bronze stars), Southwest Asia Service Medal (one bronze star), Army Service Ribbon and NATO Medal.
LTC (R) Schlereth had four combat tours, which included one in Saudi Arabia after the Gulf War, two tours in Afghanistan and one in Kuwait. LTC (R) Schlereth will always be a Mallory Man.
The Ford-Kinnick Leadership and Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Awards are part of the Big Ten's annual awards program. The Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award is named for Michigan's Gerald Ford and Iowa's Nile Kinnick. The Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award is named for Minnesota's Tony Dungy and Indiana's Anthony Thompson.
